Output decides how thick a MIG welder handles in one pass. These are the machines in our catalog with the highest maker-stated top amperage, ordered from the most powerful down. By Miller's 1 amp per 0.001 inch rule, 200 amps reaches about 3/16 inch and 250 amps about 1/4 inch.
Peak output means little without duty cycle: a machine rated 30% at 200 amps welds about 3 minutes in each 10 there. Each note gives the maker's duty cycle points and input power; most of these need 240 volts for full output.
Every machine here needs eye protection of at least OSHA's minimum shade, gloves and flame-resistant clothing, and combustibles kept 35 feet away or shielded, per OSHA 1910.252.

Picking between them
Start from the thickest steel you'll weld often and the power you have: Miller's 1 amp per 0.001 inch rule gives the current, and 120-volt circuits cap most machines around 140 amps. Then check duty cycle at that current, not at the peak.
Gas MIG gives cleaner welds indoors; flux-core works outdoors without a bottle. Check the wire sizes the drive rolls take and whether a spool gun is supported if you'll weld aluminium.
When another list fits better
If you only have household power, the 120-volt list fits better.
