Stick Welders

Arc welders for rusty steel, outdoor work and repairs, ordered by maker-stated top output, highest first.

By Arcuracy Editorial · Updated October 2026

Stick welding needs no gas and copes with rust, paint residue and wind better than any wire process, which keeps it the farm and repair workhorse. These are ordered by the maker's top output, highest first.

Electrode size sets the current: OSHA's shade table pairs 60 to 160 amps with 3/32 to 5/32-inch rods (minimum shade 8) and 160 to 250 amps with larger rods (shade 10). Each note gives the rod sizes the maker states.

Stick welding's flux makes slag and fume; ventilate as OSHA's fume fact sheet advises.

How this list was builtEvery stick welder in our catalog qualifies. Our editors order them by maker-stated top output, highest first; each note gives input power, duty cycle and electrode sizes.

Picking between them

Match output to the rods you'll run (their packaging states the current range) and the input to your power. Check duty cycle at the amps those rods need.

Inverter stick welders are light and often dual-voltage; transformer machines are heavy and simple.

When another list fits better

For thin sheet metal, MIG or TIG gives more control.

Questions welders ask

What rods can a 140 amp stick welder run?
Typically up to 1/8-inch rods within their printed current range; check the maker's electrode statement.
Is stick welding good for beginners?
It's cheap to start and forgiving of dirty steel, but harder to master on thin metal.
Do stick welders need gas?
No; the rod's flux coating shields the weld.
What shade for stick?
OSHA: 8 for 60 to 160 A, 10 for 160 to 250 A, 11 above.
